Damona Mozzarella Review

Damona Mozzarella review with vegan cheese melted on pizza

When it comes to vegan cheese in Australia, it’s fair to say we’ve come a long way from those chalky, plastic-like beginnings. Let’s be honest, though, even now not every option quite hits the mark. A lot of vegan mozzarella-style cheeses available are chalky, lack stretch, or just don’t melt properly unless you give them a little extra help. So, when I tried out Damona Mozzarella, I honestly didn’t have huge expectations.

But this one actually ended up surprising me, and in a good way!

First Impressions of Damona Mozzarella

Damona is an Australian brand known for crafting small-batch, vegan cheeses with a focus on real flavour and texture. The Damona mozzarella looks like the real deal straight out of the pack, with that pale white tone you expect from traditional mozzarella.

Straight away, I noticed the mild aroma and creamy texture. Unlike some vegan cheeses that smell overly artificial or plasticky, the Damona mozzarella felt clean and balanced, with just a hint of tang. This is generally what dairy mozzarella is like too - it’s not meant to be overpowered.

How I Tested the Damona Mozzarella

Damona Mozzarella melted on pizza

For this Damona Mozzarella review, I kept things super simple to give this vegan cheese a fair go and to truly test its claims of “the perfect melt”. I made a basic pizza with just tomato sauce and a generous sprinkle of Damona’s shredded mozzarella on top - no fancy tricks or extra toppings to mask the flavour.

I cooked it in the air fryer at 160°C for 10 minutes. Normally, to get vegan cheese to melt, you’d have to cover it to trap steam or even zap it in the microwave for an extra melt boost - I didn’t do any of that this time around.

As I said earlier, I was quite cautious with this vegan cheese review, because most vegan cheeses don’t melt on their own, and they just aren’t that good. This is where the Damona vegan mozzarella really impressed me - it actually melted!

The Damona vegan mozzarella melted well, forming those soft, gooey pockets you’d expect from traditional mozzarella. There was even a bit of that cheese stretch that’s so rare with vegan varieties.

The melted bits tasted smooth and buttery, not grainy or rubbery. It didn’t separate or pool with oil either, which is something that happens far too often with coconut-oil-based cheeses. Even though the product lists soy milk, coconut oil, tapioca starch, and a few organic acids as its main ingredients, the texture and mouthfeel felt far more authentic than most other vegan cheeses that I’ve tried.

Flavour-wise, it’s mild with a subtle tang, which works perfectly for pizza. Traditional mozzarella isn’t meant to dominate your dish with overbearing flavours, and the Damona vegan Mozzarella has nailed that balance. It blends beautifully with pizza sauce and toppings rather than overpowering them.

If you’ve tried other brands that taste overly processed or plasticky, you’ll appreciate that this one is clean and neutral, which is ideal for pizza, lasagne, toasties, or even melted over pasta bakes.

The only downside that I experienced with this vegan cheese was, that while the cheese did melt, it didn’t melt and spread like you’d experience with traditional dairy cheese. It’s a small set-back for an otherwise near perfect vegan mozzarella option.
