Chocolate soy protein crisps slice

A ridiculously simple 3-ingredient chocolate soy protein crisps slice made with crunchy soy crisps, peanut butter and dark chocolate. High in protein, crunchy, chocolatey and ready for the fridge in minutes.

If you've been wondering how to use soy protein crisps, this is one of the easiest soy crisp recipes you can make - and it actually tastes good!

With just three ingredients and no baking required, this is the sort of recipe I love having in the fridge when I want something sweet and crunchy without turning the kitchen upside down. For a bonus: They are fully kid-approved too.

A Simple Soy Crisps Recipe With Just 3 Ingredients

I've been experimenting with soy protein crisps more recently, particularly as I've been paying much more attention to protein and overall nutrition.

If you've followed my fitness journey in recent times, you'll know that the last eight months have been a pretty big change for me. I've lost around 27kg, dramatically changed my eating habits and spent a lot more time thinking about what I'm actually putting into my body.

I'm now moving away from the more aggressive calorie deficit and towards a lean bulk, with the goal of gradually building some muscle while keeping the definition I've worked hard to achieve.

That means protein has become even more important.

But I'm also not interested in eating nothing but protein shakes and tofu for the rest of my life.

I still want chocolate.

I still want snacks.

That's where these Chocolate Soy Protein Crisps come in.

Why I Love This Chocolate Soy Crisps Slice

There isn't much to this recipe, and that's exactly why I like it. If you know me by now, you know I love simple recipes and this little treat is another winner.

You only need:

Soy protein crisps + peanut butter + dark chocolate.

That's it.

The soy crisps provide the crunchy texture and a decent hit of protein, while the peanut butter adds richness and helps bind everything together. The dark chocolate brings the whole thing together and, well… it's chocolate.

Once everything is mixed, you simply press it into a lined baking tin and let the fridge do the rest.

  • No oven.

  • No complicated preparation.

  • No long list of ingredients.

It's one of those easy no-bake slice recipes that you can throw together in a few minutes.

And because the finished slice is quite rich, you don't need a huge piece to satisfy that chocolate craving.

What Are Soy Protein Crisps?

You may be asking ā€œJack, what the heck are soy protein crisps?!ā€

If you haven't come across them before, soy protein crisps are crunchy pieces made predominantly from soy protein.

They're quite different from traditional soy products like tofu and tempeh because they're light, crispy and generally designed to be incorporated into snacks, cereals, bars and recipes - think flavourless rice bubbles.

They're particularly useful if you're looking for ways to increase the protein content of homemade snacks without relying entirely on protein powder.

I actually think they're an underrated ingredient for anyone following a vegan or plant-based diet, and an ingredient I don’t think people talk about nearly enough.

They're crunchy straight from the packet and can be incorporated into sweet or savoury recipes.

Which brings us to the question I see quite a bit...

How Do You Use Soy Protein Crisps?

There are plenty of ways to use them.

You can add soy protein crisps to cereal or granola, mix them through homemade protein bars, use them in energy bites or combine them with melted chocolate to make an easy snack.

You can also experiment with different flavours.

For this recipe, I've gone with the very simple combination of peanut butter and dark chocolate, but you could potentially add things like coconut, chopped nuts, dried fruit or even a little vanilla depending on what you're after.

If you're searching for soy crisp recipes or wondering how to use soy protein crisps, I'd start with something simple like this.

Are Soy Crisps Healthy for You?

This is probably one of the most common questions you'll come across when searching for soy crisps - ā€œAre Soy Crisps Healthy for you?ā€

The answer depends on the particular product you're buying and, of course, what you're using them for.

Soy protein crisps can be a convenient way to add protein and crunch to a snack, but I wouldn't automatically classify a finished recipe containing soy crisps as a "health food".

In this recipe, we're combining them with peanut butter and dark chocolate, so this is still a treat.

For me, that's actually the point.

During my weight-loss phase, I learned that I didn't need to completely eliminate foods I enjoyed. Instead, I became much more mindful about portions and how often I was eating certain foods.

This slice fits nicely into that philosophy.

It's a small, rich, crunchy chocolate snack that can be portioned into 17 pieces.

And having those individual portions already cut in the fridge makes it much easier to grab one rather than sitting down with an entire block of chocolate and wondering where it disappeared to!

If you divide this chocolate soy protein crisps slice into 17 slices, each piece contains approximately:

  • 123 calories

  • 8g protein

  • 11g fat

  • 3.9g carbohydrates

For me, that makes this a particularly handy snack during my current lean bulk.

I'm trying to increase my calorie intake gradually while keeping protein relatively high, and having easy snacks available makes that much easier.

It's also a nice change from constantly reaching for a protein shake.

Of course, the nutritional numbers will depend on the exact soy crisps, peanut butter and dark chocolate you use, so consider these figures an estimate based on the ingredients I used.

Where Can I Buy Soy Crisps in Australia?

This is another question worth discussing because soy protein crisps aren't necessarily sitting in every supermarket next to the tofu, but availability is always improving and here’s a few that you can find:

Woolworths:

Coles:

Availability can vary depending on location, so I'd also recommend checking health-food stores, specialty food retailers and online stores.

It's also worth checking the ingredients and nutrition panel of the particular product you buy, as soy crisps can vary considerably between brands.

For this recipe, I used 100g of soy crisps, which was equivalent to roughly 2 cups from the packet I had.

That leaves you with plenty of opportunity to experiment with the remaining crisps too.

Can You Change the Ingredients?

Absolutely.

The beauty of this 3-ingredient soy protein crisps slice is how easy it is to customise.

You could swap the peanut butter for another nut butter or even biscoff if you prefer. Almond butter would work particularly well, although the flavour and consistency will change slightly.

You could also experiment with different dark chocolates.

A darker chocolate will give you a more intense, less sweet result, while a sweeter dark chocolate will make the slice taste more like a traditional chocolate bar.

If you want some extra texture, you could also experiment by adding desiccated coconut, chopped nuts or seeds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are soy protein crisps healthy for you?
Soy protein crisps can be a convenient source of plant protein, but whether a particular product is a good fit for you depends on its ingredients and nutritional profile. In this recipe, they're combined with peanut butter and dark chocolate, so I'd consider the finished slice a protein-containing treat rather than a "health food".

How do you use soy protein crisps?
Soy protein crisps are incredibly versatile. Try adding them to homemade protein bars, granola, cereal, energy bites or chocolate-based snacks like this recipe.

Yes. Almond butter or another nut butter can be substituted for peanut butter, although the flavour and consistency may vary.

Yes, you can freeze individual pieces in an airtight container. Allow them to thaw in the refrigerator before eating for the best texture. These should last in the freezer for around 2-3 months.
